Wrexham star Paul Mullin discharged from hospital after punctured lung

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin has been discharged from hospital after puncturing his lung in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United.

After a collision with Nathan Bishop left the star man went down in significant pain, before being taken to a local hospital in San Diego.

Mullin tweeted: "Discharged, Thank you to everyone @UCSDHealth for the incredible care! Will keep everyone updated but rest and recover is the 1st step!"

It came after he shared an image of himself in the hospital earlier in the day stating that he was on the mend.

Mullin's entanglement with the United goalkeeper was a nasty one with the youngster raising his boots and catching the striker - before being booed by fans in attendance.

The 23-year-old has since penned an apology to his opponent on Twitter, when he wrote: "Just wanted to share my sincerest apologies to @PMullin7. A complete misjudgement and a genuine accident with 0 malicious intent at all! Wishing you the speediest recovery and hope to see you back scoring goals as soon as possible!"

Despite the apology, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson was furious with the challenge.

Speaking after the game, he said: "I’m fuming about it, I’ve got to be honest with you. It was a clumsy, reckless, challenge in a pre-season game and I’m not happy with it at all.

"I haven’t seen the goalie and he’s probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we’re not very happy. It should have been a straight red.

"If it’s not denying a goal scoring opportunity it’s still a dangerous challenge, so if you add the two scenarios together he should have been off the pitch.

"It’s a dangerous challenge and obviously Paul Mullin is our talisman. The way the lads responded after that I thought was outstanding. That’s what we’re all about as a group - resilience, sticking together. And that’s what we showed."

Wrexham are set to continue their pre-season tour in the United States, when they'll face Philadelphia Union later this week before returning to Wales ahead of their first season back in the EFL in 17 years.

Man Utd named a youthful XI for the Wrexham game, with their first-team due to play Real Madrid in Houston on Wednesday. Bishop was joined by fellow academy talents including Hannibal and Shola Shoretire, while veteran defender Jonny Evans added experience after recently arriving on a short-term deal.
