Having flies in your home can be a real nightmare, and unfortunately, as we continue to push through the summer months, the likelihood of you coming across one of the insects is only getting higher, as they thrive at this time of year.

But you don't have to shut your windows and walk around your house with a can of fly spray attached to your hip at all times, as there are actually a few easy hacks you can use to banish them from your home for good.

And according to home and health experts, one of the items you can use to repel flies from your home is actually a healthy veggie that you've probably been adding to your summer salads for the past couple of months - cucumber.

Speaking to The Express, experts at Health Plan Spain - where flies are prevalent in the hot weather - said: "If you find that flies are drawn to your rubbish/food bins, one of the best ways to prevent them from laying their eggs there is to place slices of cucumber on the top of the bin.

"In addition to that, if you find flies are drawn to certain areas around your home, placing cucumber slices around those areas will help keep them at bay."

What's more, cucumber slices and peels can help keep other pests such as ants out of your home too - but make sure to replace the slices regularly before they rot and attract other bugs.

And if decorating your bins with cucumber isn't your thing, there are other tricks you can try as well, including making a repellent from vodka, which flies hate the smell of.

The experts added: "Quite simply get a glass spray bottle and mix one cup of vodka with a teaspoon of organic lemon eucalyptus oil and two teaspoons of aloe vera juice. Spray all areas and surfaces that have or may attract flies to distract them."

You can even use this solution as a repellent for mosquitos by spraying it on your skin, especially the ankles and wrists, so that the biting insects stay well away from you.

And finally, the health experts recommend making a fly trap out of a bottle with some apple cider vinegar inside - which will attract the flies into the bottle, but stop them from being able to escape.

All you need to do is cut the top of a plastic bottle, add a bit of apple cider vinegar and place the neck of the bottle downwards, like a funnel. House flies will be attracted to it and will soon be trapped in the "natural and easy-to-make fly trap," as the experts explained.

The trap is "great to use both indoors and outside and is one of the most effective methods".

For an alternative, the experts suggested: "Fill a bowl three-quarters of the way with apple cider vinegar and add a drop of washing up liquid. The detergent will allow the liquid in the bowl to have a firmer surface, giving the flies a false sense of security, before they eventually fall into the vinegar.

"When doing this, make sure you place the bowl away from any other temptations on the table or countertops. You don't want anything else to catch their attention and draw them away from your trap."
