Erik ten Hag says Manchester United are making progress in their bid to sign a striker – after admitting they need to score more goals.

Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund is United's first-choice target, but they are also looking at Eintracht Frankfurt's Kolo Randal Muani and Ajax's Mohammed Kudus. United were the lowest scorers in the Premier League's top six last season with 58 goals and Ten Hag said they need to recruit a new striker as quickly as possible.

“What I can say is we're do everything that's in our power to get it done,” said Ten Hag. “For me, as soon as possible and the earlier the better, because we have to integrate him in the team, the way of play.

“In an ideal situation, he would already be here, but you don't always get ideal situations as a manager and you have to deal with the situation.

“We've made progress, yeah, but you know how it works - when we have him, we will tell you directly.

“We're underperforming [in terms of scoring goals] and we're aware of it. But others have to contribute in that area and, in Mason Mount, we have a player capable of scoring goals, to put Rashford into the position to score more goals and, as a team, we have to score more.”

Marcus Rashford scored a career-best 30 goals last season and Ten Hag backed him to repeat those heroics in the upcoming campaign – but only if he has the right mindset.

“When his attitude is right then he will do that,” said Ten Hag. “But it's not easy and the team has to play well and put him in the right positions.

“When the team is playing well, when we keep to the rules and principles in the way of play, then Rashford will finish. He has great abilities in the box, he's clinical, he's ruthless, he scores goals, with his right foot, with his left foot and with his head."

Ten Hag revealed Anthony Martial, who has been training alone as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, has joined in with full training and is in contention to play against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

“Today he was in the team training, so we're really hopeful,” said Ten Hag. “Of course, when you have a player in your squad, you have to expect he is available and players have to take responsibility.

“If not, I have to deal with the situation and we have shown we can be successful without him. But it's easier to win trophies when you have that striker in the team.

“We need a good squad and Anthony Martial is a brilliant football player, so he will help us score goals. There are other areas like pressing and combinations. He's a great player, we hope he's fit and that he stays fit.”
