TV foodie Gregg Wallace has shocked viewers with his latest programme for Channel 4 as the Masterchef presenter tucked into a human steak.

The satirical documentary 'Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat' aired tonight (Monday 24 July) and highlighted the lengths that people go to to make ends meet, including letting their cells and flesh be 'harvested' to create human steaks.

In scripted and fictional scenes, Gregg met with human donors giving up their flesh and even sat with children being drafted in for harvesting.

The scenes, which were completely fictional, had viewers in uproar but it was one scene in particular that had their stomachs churning as Gregg alongside Michelin chef pal Michel Roux Jr tucked into human steaks to sample the meat.

In the scene, the two chefs sat at the table and then try to guess what kind of person the meat could have come from.

Describing one steak grown from lab-grown human meat as "a little bit stringy", Gregg didn't seem impressed before the pair tried another that they labelled as "tender" and "fattier".

However, viewers at home couldn't get over what they were seeing. One viewer tweeted: "This Channel 4 programme with Gregg Wallace and the geezer growing a human steak in a laboratory is really freaking me out."

Another added with vomiting emojis: "THAT’S JUST SICK- EATING HUMANS FLESH IN 21st CENTURY INCLUDING CHILDREN."

"Just watched Gregg Wallace’s The British Miracle Meat on C4, quite frankly it’s the sickest thing I’ve ever seen. It was as sinister as any human experiment in Nazi Germany, basically enticing people in poverty to donate flesh to make human meat in exchange for a few hundred £s," said a third.

A fourth added: "What dystopian hell have we stumbled into with Gregg Wallace and Michel Roux Jr on me telly sampling lab-grown human steaks and trying to guess the people whose cells were donated for them by the flavour profiles."

A fifth tweeted: "Can I just say how disturbing Gregg Wallace's #miraclemeat is... surely it can't be real."

Meanwhile, another viewer fumed: "I'm not sure that #miraclemeat will have done @GreggAWallace any favours careerwise. Maybe set a new record for Ofcom complaints. My wife wanted it switched off after 5 mins, I imagine a lot did the same & didn't realise it was satire (which became more obvs as it went on)."

However some viewers twigged that the documentary was in fact a mockumentary and completely fake, and making a point about the cost of living crisis and inflation having hugely detrimental effects on the public.

One viewer tweeted: "I totally just felt like I’d stepped into a Black Mirror world. It took a while before the penny dropped. I’m quite impressed with Gregg Wallace, such a good way of highlighting the madness of the state of the UK and cost of living crisis."

Another added: "I was expecting that Gregg Wallace programme on lab-grown meat to be about Quorn or similar. It was darker. Much much darker. Loved it.."

"Must admit the Gregg Wallace British Miracle Meat mockumentary had me for the first 10-15mins. Shows where we are in this country that this is almost believable" said a third.

A fourth wrote: "Watching Gregg Wallace: The British Miracle Meat. Clever in a way as you get angrier and see it getting more unethical as the programme progresses….and then you see the words ‘Cast in alphabetical order’."

"How are people believing the gregg wallace cannibalism mockumentary is real," said a fifth.
