Gran hails herself 'salad whisperer' after shedding 5 stone over diabetes fears
A former school cook has hailed herself the "salad whisperer" after she dropped a whopping five stone in the space of a year.
Kay Warren, from Cheshire, embarked on a weight loss mission after she feared she would develop diabetes.
The grandma-of-three was classed as obese during the pandemic as her weight soared to just over 16 stone.
Kay, who had already been diagnosed with a heart condition, decided to sign up for slimming group Beeweighed in July 2022.
Combined with calorie counting and regularly walking her beloved lurcher dogs, the mum managed to go from a dress size 22 to a size 12 in just 12 months.

And she puts the key to her weight loss success down to one thing – her newfound love of salads.

“It’s been a case of playing around with salads. So many people think salads are just lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber.
“But I’ve thrown everything at a salad – including sprouts. I’m sort of like a salad whisperer.
“It’s just proven that you don’t have to have an empty plate to lose weight.”

An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, or ICD, is a device that detects a life-threatening, rapid heartbeat called an arrhythmia.
If it occurs, the ICD quickly sends an electrical shock to the heart. The defibrillation changes the rhythm back to normal.
But Kay knew one way to reduce the cardiac risk of those with ICDs was to lose weight – now seeing a huge change in her physical health.
“When I see a hill now, I’m charging up it, whereas before I’d go around it,” she added.

“You walk past the odd window and think, ‘Oh, what she’s wearing is nice,’ and realise the person you’re looking at is you.
“Other people see the difference, but only now when I bring up a picture from 12 months ago, I think, ‘Oh my God, I look so different!’”
Incredibly, Kay’s new healthy lifestyle has now reversed her prediabetes, a condition that meant she was likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
“It’s had a knock-on effect with health,” she said.
“I’ve kept the diabetes at bay. The nurse couldn’t believe I’d lost that amount of weight; she said the results were amazing.
“At one point, I was being classed as obese. You have to [lose weight] because you want to do it – and for yourself.”
