ITV bosses' ploy to stop stars from 'jumping ship' with 'BBC show ban'

ITV bosses are reportedly at war with the BBC over some of their biggest stars “jumping ship” to appear on Strictly Come Dancing.

The channel is said to want to keep its own stars for ITV shows such as I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

It is rumoured stars signed to ITV have effectively been banned from signing up to BBC shows like Strictly.

Only situations that meet their super-strict criteria will result in ITV stars being allowed to appear on Strictly, it is claimed.

Exact details of what the criteria is has not been revealed, but it is thought there are said to be “severe conditions” for big names who breach the rules.

Considerations taken into account reportedly include their workload – as most soap stars work nine-to-five style shifts – and if their main shows have a schedule clash with a rival programme.

This could explain why many stars only sign for Strictly after leaving huge ITV programmes such as Coronation Street.

Catherine Tyldesley, who played Eva Price in Corrie, signed up for the 2019 series of Strictly Come Dancing after leaving the long-running soap in 2018.

Katie McGlynn, who played Sinead Tinker until 2020, followed suit appearing on Strictly in 2021.

And, just last week, it was reported Ellie Leach, who played Corrie’s Faye Windass has signed up for the next series of Strictly weeks after leaving the cobbles.

Paperwork reportedly seen by The Sun claims to outline the ‘general rules’ their stars must follow.

It reads: “All television appearances will also be subject to consideration of ITV’s commercial interests, especially whether the show might compete against ITV”s programmes, impact on ITV’s ratings and therefore damage ITV’s commercial interests.

“As a general rule, we will support shows on ITV and productions from ITV Studios.

“For example, we’d say no to an artiste appearing on Strictly, but are likely to support an artiste appearing on I’m A Celebrity.”

It is thought the BBC have a similar contract in place for its own stars when it comes to appearing on ITV shows like I’m A Celebrity.

The BBC declined to comment when contacted by the Mirror while ITV are yet to respond.

And it could explain why This Morning host Josie Gibson was picked to appear on ITV’s next series of I’m A Celeb after reports of a ‘bidding war’ with Strictly.

The 38-year-old TV host is reportedly set to sign a six-figure deal which will see her head into the jungle later this year.

Other ITV stars rumoured to have signed up to the show include Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs in Corrie, and Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid.

Danny Dyer – who recently quit the BBC’s EastEnders – has also had his name mentioned as has veteran TV presenter Denise Van Outen and even former prime minister Boris Johnson.
