Klopp makes Liverpool transfer demand after 'next Steven Gerrard' comparison
Liverpool have revived their interest in signing Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde – who former Reds striker Luis Suarez likened in playing style to Steven Gerrard.
Despite signing Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively this summer, the Reds are light in midfield numbers. James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all gone, while captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are both strongly linked to exits.
Suarez – who plays alongside Valverde at international level for Uruguay – has spoken of how stylistically similar he is to former Reds captain Gerrard. "There are newspaper archives, back in 2017, when Fede [Valverde] made his debut in the national team I already said he reminded me of Steven Gerrard," Suarez explained.
Valverde is a versatile midfielder known for his pace, stamina, work rate, and shooting power – he is known for his energy, that has also seen him deployed at right-back for Real Madrid. He bagged 12 goals last season for the Spanish giants and his style is undeniably a strong fit for Jurgen Klopp.
When previously asked about comparisons to Gerrard, Valverde told infobae : "It's spectacular when you are compared to such a player, to a star, a world idol, not just a Liverpool one. It’s amazing.

"I see characteristics of him, obviously, I’m not going to say no, but one always looks out for one self. I also want to leave my name and my mark in the world of football, not just Madrid but in the national team."

A report in El Nacional has outlined how Liverpool have revived their interest in signing the 24-year-old, due to Real Madrid’s other transfer interest this summer. A year ago, Marca first detailed how the Spanish giants were preparing for a bid.
Madrid are well stocked in midfield options with veterans Luka Modric and Toni Kroos complimented by arrivals in recent windows such as Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni. Jude Bellingham – another Liverpool target – moved to the Spanish capital this summer.
That means that Valverde is not a guaranteed starter in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, while their ambitious attempts to sign superstar striker Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain means they are open to cashing-in on players who are not central to their project.
That appears to have opened the door to an ambitious move for Valverde, with Liverpool’s need for reinforcements ahead of the Premier League returning next month growing increasingly urgent.
