A mum-of-two who was tragically found dead on a footpath is feared to have been “taken”, say police.

Officers raced to concerns for a woman's welfare in Rochdale, Greater Manchester at around 4.30am on Monday.

A woman was found dead at the scene, who has since been identified as 40-year-old Kerry Newman - a "loving daughter and mother of two boys".

Police have since launched an investigation into her death, which has now been declared as "suspicious" after she is believed to have been "taken" from an address in Freehold. Two people, aged 48 and 52, have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

In an emotional tribute, Kerry’s mother and stepfather said she was "taken away from us too soon".

Her cause of death is currently unknown.

One neighbour told the Manchester Evening News: "It's frightening. I've never witnessed any incidents in this area and this feels very serious. My thoughts are with the family."

Another added: "I'm really shocked and worried. I've got a 10-year-old daughter who plays around there and I send her down that path on her own to the arcade. It's a popular footpath to the retail park but I'm really scared at the idea of her walking down there now."
