Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has revealed plans to give star quarterback Patrick Mahomes “new challenges” this off-season.

The Chiefs are preparing for their defence of the Super Bowl, which they won against the Philadelphia Eagles in February. The triumph was the second Super Bowl ring that Mahomes and Reid have won during their time with the franchise.

July 18 saw the Chiefs rookies and new signings arrive for the first day of training camp. The full roster is not due to report back until July 23, but Mahomes was in attendance as the team’s star quarterback.

The remainder of the summer will see the Chiefs take part in three pre-season games in preparation for the 2023 NFL regular season. Those three games will be against the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns.

That will all be the build-up to the Week One opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football on September 7. And Reid has already outlined that he will be setting challenges for his star quarterback during the remainder of the off-season.

“With quarterbacks, the work’s never done,” Reid told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday.

“I’ve mentioned it before, it’s like being a farmer. You just keep on cranking. And we’re always trying to give him new challenges with things and he loves that and loves to attack those types of things. So, that’s where it’s at.

“But there are always things to work on. Fundamentally, there’s things to work on. He spends a tremendous amount of time at that, he puts a lot of effort into it. And, obviously, the new plays.”

Reflecting on the forthcoming training camp as a whole, Reid says he is excited to work with the remaining players in the roster as well as the new rookies. The Chiefs drafted Felix Anudike-Uzomah with their first-round pick in April’s NFL Draft, as well as six further players across the seven rounds.

"We're looking forward to getting this thing started," Reid said. "[We have] a good group of guys coming in [for this rookie camp].

“We'll be about one deep, so [we'll] have to work the rotation as we go with the camp, but it'll be good to get these young guys some reps, [and I'm] looking forward to that."

Reid added: "I think it's great for the young guys. I think it's good for the older guys just to get tuned up, [and] they know what it takes to get themselves ready for the season.

"This is a way to knock a little rust off, but for the young guys, I think it's even more beneficial."
