What could well be Britain’s poshest beach huts are about to be opened in Cornwall by high-end grocer Fortnum & Mason.

The iconic quality goods chain, which is best known for its distinctive blue-green livery and its range of teas, is opening up a trio of beach huts were ‘inspired by the nostalgia of summers spent on the British coast’.

They will be open to parties of six at Watergate Bay near Newquay, Cornwall and be painted in Fortnum & Mason’s signature shade of ‘Eau de Nil’.

The huts have been designed by the store and are kitted out with handpicked homeware that includes "beautiful rugs and blankets to keep guests warm on chillier summer days".

To be able to kick back in the huts, beachgoers must buy a specific Fortnum hamper which contains a meal combining "the very best fresh dishes from independent Cornish suppliers with the store’s famous picnic products".

Two picnic menus will be available, designed for either two or four people and put together by nearby Emily Scott Food, with waiters serving those lucky enough to be luxuriating in the huts.

They offer a choice of either the seaside picnic, which includes crab sandwiches with summer tomatoes paired with shallots and basil, or the indulgent seaside feast, with lobster, black truffle and Scotch eggs paired with salad cream and pickled mustard seeds.

For dessert there’s fig leaf soft serve ice cream and Cornish cheddar truckle cheese served with Fortnum’s crackers.

A bottle of Fortnum & Mason sparkling tea will also be included in the hamper, along with the store’s pistachio and clotted cream biscuits, savoury '181 Sauce' and a box of cheese sables.

The cost of the hampers ranges from £195 to £295, so it's certainly not a cheap afternoon out.

"Every beach hut will enjoy the very best hospitality, including a pre-set picnic table, complete with stylish tableware and table service," a statement from the shopping firm reads.

The huts also have rugs and blankets for guests to keep warm on chillier summer days, as well as tables laid with stylish tableware.

They launch on Tuesday 25 July and will run until the 10 of September, with booking slots running for two and a half hours.

For those who are unable to secure one, Fortnum & Mason deck chairs can also be hired on the beach.

In May the Mirror reported on what will become the most expensive beach hut ever sold in Wales if it achieves its asking price of £250,000.

The double-fronted hut is on the main beach in the village of Abersoch, Gwynedd, where the previous hut price record of £200,000 was set in 2022.

The hut’s estimate is almost £50,000 more than the average house price in Wales, £214,000. The quarter of a million pounds asked will get any buyer a simple 26ft by 10ft building, with very few frills.

The huts on the beach are not connected to the mains water and staying overnight is strictly forbidden. Despite this, the buyer will still have to pay council tax on the property, which is estimated to be nearly £800 this year.

But the hut’s appeal is its location – it’s a stone’s throw from the sea and a sailing club.

Grace Earnshaw, from Wilmslow in Cheshire, who was enjoying a day on the beach with her two young daughters, was unsurprised by the price tag.

She added: “It’s in a good location. It’s probably going to go for a lot more than that.”

But the beach hut sale has angered Plaid Cymru MP Mabon ap Gwynfor, who said: “Young people have no chance of getting housing in their own communities. It’s a perfect example of how the property market lets Wales down.”
