Wayne Rooney gives brutally honest verdict on Mason Greenwood and Man Utd
Wayne Rooney has urged Mason Greenwood to leave Manchester United, insisting he has no future at Old Trafford.
Greenwood has not played since January 2022, with the Crown Prosecution Service having its case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control dropped in February. United have been conducting their own internal investigation into the striker, the results of which are expected soon. Greenwood has always vehemently denied the allegations.
Boss Erik ten Hag held discussions with Greenwood recently, though the 21-year-old has not been included in the squad that will go on tour to the United States. The first-team squad are understood to be split on Greenwood returning to the group.
That decision about whether Greenwood will be part of the Red Devils going forward is set to be taken by club chiefs, rather than Ten Hag and his staff. And Rooney has warned the striker to expect to be searching for a new club.
“It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck. So for Mason, it’s a bad position to be in because I’m sure he just wants to play football," Rooney told The Athletic when asked about Greenwood's situation.

"But for the club, its image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it’s almost a catch 22. I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else. He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time.
"With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.

Rooney's warning came after United suffered a blow to their plans of moving Greenwood on this summer. The Red Devils had been hoping to include him as part of a deal that would see Atalanta star Rasmus Hojlund move to Old Trafford.
But the Serie A side have rejected that idea, insisting they will only sell the Danish international in a straight cash deal. Until the internal investigation is completed, Greenwood will stay away from training.
He has been training privately for several months in an effort to maintain his fitness, having gone 18 months without playing professional football. While United had been looking at potential loan moves for him, those plans appear to have been shelved.
Greenwood will stay in England while the rest of the squad flies out for the tour of the United States. Ten Hag's side will face Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund before returning to Manchester for further friendlies against Lens and Athletic Bilbao.
