A great white shark misses a diver's head by just INCHES after lunging towards him in terrifying footage.

The scary images show a man splashing about and waving at the camera. As he waves, he spots something over his shoulder - the one sight no diver ever wants to see.

A huge great white shark had appeared in the camera's reflection. And it wasn't there by accident - it was on the hunt. In a split-second moment that leaves viewers gasping, the diver suddenly ducks further underwater as the shark lunges at his head.

Diver Ron Elliot was swimming in the depths of the water in San Francisco when he came face-to-face with the underwater beast that scares humans the most - a great white shark that emerged from the dark recesses, eyeing the diver.

The chilling footage shows a normal diving adventure for Elliot, who is a professional and not just a hobbyist when it comes to exploring life underwater.

The diver was facing his GoPro, which was attached to his waist. It took seconds for the creature to come into focus, but the minute it did, viewers officially panicked. Luckily for Elliot, his experience diving has led him to quicker reflexes.

As the giant predator lunged for Elliot's head, the diver managed to duck just out of the way, with the shark's large mouth missing his face by mere inches. It seems, though, the shark was taunting Elliot or simply playing the world's scariest game. After it lunged and missed, it turned around and swam back into the sunless depths.

While this video originally went viral in 2017, it is still shocking to internet users.

One wrote: "This is EXACTLY why I don’t swim in the deep end." Another said: "I thought I wanted to learn to dive before watching this video." A third commented: "Amazing how the top of the shark blends in with the bottom." A fourth added: "Nightmare fuel."

One more joked: "This is levels of scary my brain and underwear cannot handle".

However, this diver isn't scared. The nearly-70-year-old ocean lover has counted more than 400 shark encounters. But Elliott says he technically doesn’t keep track.

“Those are big guesses, and I couldn’t even tell you the truth,” Elliott says. “It’s been a lot over the years.”

In 2019, the diver encountered a much scarier situation, and that video didn't go viral. Mostly because he was using his camera to fend off the shark - and it sort of worked. He's alive, but that time the shark managed to bite his forearm.

“What I found out is those teeth don’t make nice, smooth-edged cuts,” Elliott told the San Fransisco Chronicle three weeks after receiving a second surgery. He’s currently working on gaining mobility back in his wrist and fingers. “I’m not giving up on this baby,” he said, holding up his bandaged hand.

Since both of those shark encounters, Elliot's adventures were immortalized in a documentary titled: 'Near Miss - the Survival of a Shark Man.' The movie showcases the shark-chaser in an epic dive, surrounded by great whites.

“Whatever happens underwater, when you break the surface, it puts me in a trance,” Elliott says in the film. “There’s a lot of movement, but no sound. That’s what life is about for me, is experiencing the moment. There’s no other thoughts beyond that. So that’s why I do it.”
