The Powerball jackpot has surged yet again to an astounding $1BILLION as no lucky ticket holder managed to secure a winning combination in the latest drawing.

During Monday's drawing, none of the tickets matched the numbers: 5, 8, 9, 17, 41, and the red Powerball 2. The initial jackpot was estimated at $900million.

For the upcoming Wednesday drawing, the jackpot - the equivalent of £770million - is set to become the third highest in the history of the United States, and it will continue to grow until a fortunate winner emerges.

Ticket buyers stand a chance to claim this massive prize either through yearly increments or by opting for a substantial one-time lump sum of $516.8 million (£396.37 million) before taxes.

Three people won $2 million (£1.53 million) after matching all five numbers plus the Power Play, lottery officials said. The winning tickets were sold in Arkansas, Georgia and Texas.

Five people won $1 million (£770,000) after matching all five numbers. The winning tickets were sold in Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, New York and Pennsylvania.

The game's abysmal odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to build big prizes that draw more players. The largest Powerball jackpot was $2.04 billion (£1.56 billion) Powerball last November.

The last time someone won the Powerball jackpot was April 19 for a top prize of nearly $253 million (£194.04 million). Since then, no one has won the grand prize in the past 38 consecutive drawings.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, a lottery expert revealed a strategy to increase winning chances, based on analysing locations of recent winners.

An Arizona news station shared a map highlighting recent winners' locations and the specific stores where they won.

The advice is to consider locations with multiple winning tickets, but it's not guaranteed to work everywhere. Other methods to improve odds exist, but winning can never be guaranteed in the lottery.

Selecting numbers with personal significance, such as birthdays or meaningful digits, is another strategy that some players claim is effective, despite no mathematical evidence behind it.

As one lottery expert told 12 News: "One, two, three, four, five, six has the same odds as any other numbers, so you should decide how to pick your numbers based on what's most fun for you."

For instance, North Carolina resident Audrey Woodard won $25,000 per year for life by using family birthday numbers.
