People are swearing by a method to fall asleep in just two minutes first developed by the US Army that is now going viral on social media.

Being referred to as the 'military sleep' technique, users of the popular social media app TikTok have been going wild for it, primising it can help many people nod off in only two minutes.

It was reportedly developed by the armed forces to easily fall asleep at any time - vital if troops are to take any chance to recharge their batteries.

Fitness coach Justin Agustin has been spreading the news to his 1.7million TikTok followers, as he shows them just how to do it.

One video has been viewed more than 7.2million times in which the fitness coach claims it takes six weeks of practice before the technique will work for 96% of people who try it - a bold claim.

The origins of the method actually trace back several decades.

It may have been first described in 1981, in the book Relax and Win: Championship Performance, written by American track and field coach Lloyd Bud Winter with the aim of reducing the frequency of sports injuries and improving sports performance.

Forces.net describes the method.

The method

  1. Relax your entire face. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly and deeply. Then slowly relax all of your facial muscles. (If it helps, start with your forehead muscles and work your way down.) Relax your jaw, cheeks, mouth, tongue, everything. Including your eyes; let them go.
  2. Drop your shoulders and hands. Let go of any tension. Relax your neck, and your traps; feel yourself sinking into the chair or bed. Then start at the top of your right arm, and slowly relax your biceps, forearms, and hands. Repeat on the other side. Keep breathing slowly and deeply.
  3. Exhale and relax your chest. With your shoulders and arms relaxed.
  4. Relax your legs. Start with your right thigh; let it sink into the chair or bed. Then do the same with your calf, ankle, and foot. Repeat the process with your left leg.
  5. Now clear your mind. Try holding an image in your mind. Choose something relaxing. If this does not work...
  6. Try repeating the words 'Don't think' for 10 seconds. If nothing else, that should help distract you from thinking about whatever it is that might, otherwise, keep you awake.

Fitness coach Justin Agustin promises his followers that if they "practice this every night for six weeks, you should be able to fall asleep within two minutes of closing your eyes."

One TikTok commentator said: “I'm a military brat and was taught this. I also had a veteran as a psychology teacher in college who taught this. It definitely works”.

Another said: “My doctor taught me this technique with slight variations when I had insomnia due to PTSD. Trust me it works 100% once you get it down.”

Twitter user @Jontafkasi even said it may have cured his four decades of insomnia. “Hmm, might be a bit early to get excited but after 40 odd years of insomnia, I got a half decent sleep last night.. I'll be impressed (and a little annoyed) if it was that simple. Military method.

“I never have trouble going to sleep but usually wake up in the early hours and that's when I struggle. Normally at that stage I would toss and turn for ages but this technique stopped all that and allowed me to get back to sleep quite quickly.

"It's taken a few weeks of practice but touch wood, seems to be helping.”
