Loyalty cards and cashback sites are great for earning a little bit of money back on your shops.

Now, I admit, I am not a loyal shopper - I try to shop around for the best prices, rather than stick to one store - but I always use member cards where I can.

I also always check if a retailer is linked to a cashback site before making a purchase.

Given I don't shop at the same places week in, week out, I was surprised to find I had still built up a balance of more than £100 across several retailers.

That’s more than £100 back on purchases I would’ve made anyway over the last year or so.

The biggest balance was £60.22 sitting in my account on an online cashback website.

Cashback sites do what they say on the tin.

You sign up, then you get money back for a qualifying shop as long as you complete the transaction by clicking through to the retailer from the cashback website.

My cashpot was made up of £40 from taking out a new insurance policy earlier this year, as well as several other smaller transactions that I've let build up - including eBay purchases and train bookings.

Some of the most popular cashback websites include Topcashback.co.uk and Quidco.

The next biggest points haul I found was through my Nectar card, where I have a balance of £28.19 through shopping at Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s shoppers get one Nectar point for every £1 spent in stores and online, or for every litre of fuel purchased.

You also get points when you shop with other retailers including Argos, ASOS and Sky.

Each point is worth 0.5p to spend in Sainsbury's stores - so 100 points are therefore 50p.

In total, my balance is worth 5,638 points.

Next up, I found I have £17.50 sitting on my Tesco Clubcard account.

Tesco shoppers get one Clubcard point for every £1 spent in stores or online.

There are other ways to collect points too - for example, you get one point for every £1 spent with Tesco Mobile, or one point for every £4 when you use a Tesco credit card.

Each Clubcard point you collect is worth 1p in return to spend in Tesco stores or online - so say you have 150 points, that would be worth £1.50.

The final loyalty scheme I checked was the Superdrug Health & Beautycard where I have a grand total of... £1.

I admit I am terrible at remembering my physical Health & Beautycard and have only recently downloaded the app, so I now have a digital version - meaning no more missed points.

Shoppers get one point for every £1 they spend, then 100 points is worth £1 to spend in stores.

For those who do stick to the same retailers, their loyalty balances will make mine look pathetic.

Lynn Beattie, Mrs Mummypenny, previously told The Mirror how she found £380 in forgotten loyalty points - now that's impressive!
