Margot Robbie explains the lookalike joke that was cut from new Barbie movie.

Margot appears alongside Sex Education actress Emma Mackey in the upcoming film after the pair have often been told they look alike.

Margot said fans often mistake that she was in Sex Education – and not Emma.

Margot explained in a recent interview that she and Greta Gerwig, who is the director of Barbie, wanted Emma to star in the film so they could make a lookalike joke. However, this didn't go to plan when all of the actors had their full hair and makeup on.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Margot was asked: "Margot, what was it like to finally work with your doppelganger, Emma Mackey?"

She explained: "[Mackey] plays one of the Barbies in the movie pretty much because Greta and I thought it would be funny. We were gonna do this whole joke about us looking similar."

"But once we got all dressed up as our Barbies, we were kind of like, 'We don’t actually look that similar'. Like, when she’s got her brown hair and I’ve got my blonde hair, we don’t look that similar, so we didn’t put that joke in the movie."

Earlier in the interview, Margot shared her typical response to when fans compare her to the British actress, saying: "When people come up and say, 'I loved you in Sex Education,' I just say, 'Thank you so much.'"

Despite the skit not panning out, the lookalike duo will still both be featured as iconic Barbie dolls in the Warner Bros. film.

After plenty of advertising and premieres for the hugely anticipated movie, it is due to hit the big screen on July 21.

In the movie trailer, Barbie and Ken are seen living in Barbie Land, a world that seems to be perfect, but once they get to visit the real world they discover the joys and dangers of living among humans.

The film description reads: "After being expelled from the utopian Barbie Land for being less-than-perfect dolls, Barbie and Ken go on a journey of self-discovery to the real world."
