The BBC has once again published the salaries of its highest earning stars as part of its annual report, with some eye watering wage packets.

Gary Lineker, who presents Match of the Day and the BBC's World Cup coverage, remains top of the list, earning £1.35m in 2022/23 but he's closely followed by Radio 2 DJ Zoe Ball in second place as she is on between £980,000 and £984,999.

Gary Lineker and Zoe Ball both saw their salaries frozen from the previous year with no change.

Alan Shearer - another Match of the Day presenter - is in third place with a salary of between £445,000 and £449,999 which was a £5,000 drop from the previous year.

News presenter Huw Edwards takes the fourth spot with a salary of between £435,000 and £439,999. The nearly £500k salary is an increase for the News at 10 presenter, who saw a wage drop the year before.

Last year, Hugh fronted rolling coverage of Queen Elizabeth's death for around six hours as he announced the news to the world with viewers even called for him to receive a knighthood over his coverage of her death.

Discussing the possibility of a knighthood, Huw said: "People who have spent a lifetime giving time to deserving causes... don't get anything.

"So, although I don't mean it disrespectfully, the idea of a knighthood embarrasses me."

Stephen Nolan takes fifth spot on £400,000-£404,999 (a fall from the previous year), followed by Fiona Bruce at £395,000-£399,999 (also down from last year), and Greg James at £395,000- £399,999 (an increase on 12 months earlier).

The salaries also included BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt, Jon Kay and Sally Nugent all earn close to £200,000.

Other high-earning newsreaders include Amol Rajan, Mishal Husain, and George Alagiah - who all earn over £300,000.

Presenters Victoria Derbyshire and Laura Kuenssberg also featured in the mid to high range on the list as Derbyshire earns between £295,000-£299,999 and Kuenssberg takes home between £305,000-£309,999.

BBC foreign correspondent John Simpson was one of the lower earners on the list but still earns a wage of between £178,000 and £184,999.

The salary list makes for an eyewatering wage bill with the top ten highest earners reaching close and above £1m. However their earnings are either the same of notably lower on average than the previous year.

Last year in 2021/22 the majority of high earners cleared above £400,00, but this year there are a significant number of presenters earning less than £400,000.
