A two-year-old boy accidentally shot his pregnant mother in the back with a pistol he discovered in her nightstand.

Upon receiving a frantic call from Laura Ilg, 31, moments after being shot, the Norwalk Police Department rushed to the scene last week (June 16).

Laura's husband, Alek, 28, who was at work during the incident, also contacted emergency services after receiving a distressed call from his wife.

"She was screaming something about my son and needing to call 911," he shared with dispatchers.

Paramedics quickly transported Laura to the nearby Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where surgeons performed an emergency cesarean section in an attempt to save her unborn child.

Tragically, their efforts were in vain, and the baby did not survive. Approximately three hours after the incident, Laura Ilg was pronounced dead, leaving a devastated husband and a community in mourning.

Alek Ilg posted a tribute to his late wife: "There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and will always be the love of my life."

Upon arriving at the Ilg residence, officers forced their way through the locked front door, discovering Laura and her son in the master bedroom.

Laura explained that the room was typically locked, and baby gates were in place throughout the house.

Unfortunately, her son managed to bypass the gates and gain access to the firearm while she was occupied with laundry.

An online obituary for Laura highlighted her deep love for her family, enjoyment of attending church, and her passion for reading, crafting, and board games.

It also mentioned that Laura met her husband, Alek, while he was serving in the Marines, and they married on November 23, 2018.

"'She always wanted to be a mother and wife... She was an avid reader and especially liked Harry Potter, crafting, and enjoyed board games and was a child at heart," the tribute added.

During a thorough search of the residence, law enforcement discovered the pistol involved in the incident, along with a shell casing.

The handgun's magazine was found to contain an additional 12 rounds.

Two more firearms, a 12-gauge shotgun stored in the master bedroom closet and an airsoft rifle in the computer room closet, were also located.

The Norwalk Police Department's detective bureau executed a search warrant on the home and found several child safety features in place, including gates on most doorways and child locks on drawers.

As investigations into the tragic shooting continue, no charges have been filed thus far.
