A pregnant mum was tragically shot and killed by her two-year-old son earlier this month.

Laura Ilg, 31, called 911 at 1.11 pm on June 16 saying her little boy had accidentally got hold of a firearm and shot her in the back at a property in Norwalk, Ohio.

She was pregnant at the time and was found by officers - who were forced to kick the door in - in her upstairs bedroom with her son.

Laura remained calm but told officers she was in shock and felt uncomfortable. Chief David Smith confirmed Laura was taken to Fisher-Titus Medical Center where doctors performed an emergency C-section.

Her unborn baby was 33 weeks old and could not be saved by medics. Laura was then pronounced dead at 5pm.

Chief Smith said the house was full of safety features and this included baby gates, but it appears they were left open. Laura had told officers she was unaware her son had picked up the gun while she was doing laundry

Police said the gun was left in the nightstand and that the boy's father has since claimed it was his.

Authorities believe the incident occurred when the toddler gained access to the bedroom, which was normally left locked.

Laura's husband Alek Ilg posted on Facebook on Monday night to share his devastation at the death of his wife and their unborn child.

"If you haven't heard, Laura and our unborn son Talisen passed away Friday. There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life."

Her funeral in Norwalk is scheduled for Friday.

The incident comes after a three-year-old child shot and injured two people in Lafayette, Indiana in May. The shooting led to the arrest of a man wanted for murder in Illinois, according to reports by CNN.

In the same month, a child in Michigan accidentally shot and killed himself after finding a gun in the sofa. The boyfriend of the toddler's mum said he was "zoned out" while high on cannabis.

Research by gun safety advocate group Everytown reports that there have been at least 154 unintentional shootings by children in 2023, resulting in 58 deaths and 101 injuries across the US.

The Everytown report, 'Preventable Tragedies: Unintentional Shootings by Children' said "hundreds of children" in the US "gain access to unsecured, loaded guns" every year.

In 2022, firearms became the number one killer of children and teens in the US, surpassing fatalities caused by other incidents like motor accidents.
