A British man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting his partner on a holiday flight from the UK.

The 61-year-old was held in custody overnight following his detention yesterday before appearing in court this morning.

It was not immediately clear whether he had been released on bail by a judge or had struck a plea bargain deal with prosecutors.

Confirmation of the arrest by Spanish police came after Spanish air traffic controllers indicated officers had been called to a Jet2 plane which landed at Malaga Airport from Leeds yesterday (MON) evening to deal with a problem passenger.

The airline said today it had “no record” of any arrest on board flight LS265 from Leeds, the flight flagged by Spanish air traffic controllers.

The Civil Guard said the arrested man held had come from Manchester in an apparent indication there had been two separate incidents on board flights to Malaga from the UK on the same day.

A spokesman for the force was unable to offer any more details about the alleged assault.

Flagging up the problems they said had occurred on board Jet2 flight LS265, which touched down at Malaga Airport around 7.30pm local time yesterday, Spanish air traffic controllers said in a tweet: “The crew of a plane arriving at Malaga from the UK has requested a police presence when they arrive because of problems with a conflictive passenger.

“We expedited the approach as much as possible and coordinated the arrival of the police.

“All our support to air crews who continue to deal with this situation on a regular basis.”

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Malaga, responding to inquiries about an arrest on Monday at Malaga Airport, confirmed today: “We can confirm a 61-year-old man coming from Manchester was arrested for allegedly assaulting his female partner who was travelling with him.

“He was handed over to a specialist anti-domestic violence court in Malaga today (TUE).

Court officials could not be reached this afternoon (TUE) to explain what had happened in front of the judge.

A spokesman for Jet2 said: “We have nothing on our record about a man being arrested on flight LS265.”

Just over a week ago a passenger who arrived late for his flight at Malaga was filmed crashing to the ground in a clumsy fall during a desperate attempt to reach his plane.

The man was seen pleading with airport workers after getting to the end of the boarding gangway and discovering the plane was getting ready for take-off with a drop to the ground below.

It emerged after he had lost his balance and fell onto the runway as he tried to ease himself off the end of the jet walk that he had been identified by police and was likely to face a large fine for breaching air security.
