President Joe Biden caused confusion as he ended a speech to gun control advocates in Connecticut with the phrase 'God Save the Queen, man".

The 45th president, 80, signed off the speech to the National Safer Communities Summit in West Hartford with the unusual phrase, leading his critics to accuse Mr Biden of being confused. The phrase even began trending on Twitter.

The White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary, Olivia Dalton later told reporters Mr Biden was "commenting to someone in the crowd".

Others pointed out that the president has signed off his speeches in the same manner before. It is unclear if the phrase was a reference to Queen Elizabeth II, who died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle last year.

He told the crowd he would be unable to take selfies with them as a storm was on its way, but could take a picture with each section of the audience.

“I will stand in front of each section – no, I really mean it - if you can see the camera they can see you. It is the least consequential part of this whole meeting for you, I promise,” he said.

In an email, the White House said in a statement: "He couldn’t do the full ropeline due to weather, and was commenting to someone in the crowd."

The president has faced repeated questions and concerns over his age.

Already the oldest serving president in US history, he is set to run once again as the Democrat nominee in 2024.

There are concerns that Mr Biden is already showing signs of "cognitive impairment" and the stress of another term as President could deteriorate his condition further.

He underwent a comprehensive physical examination in February. It determined him to be in good health and fully capable of fulfilling his duties.

Announcing his candidacy for the 2024 elections, Mr Biden addressed concerns about his age - saying his age doesn't bother him and he feels good.

He mentioned he had considered his age before deciding to run for re-election.

"I can't even say I guess how old I am, I can't even say the number. It doesn't - it doesn't register with me," Mr Biden said. "I took a hard look at it before I decided to run. And I feel good.

"With regard to age, you know, and polling data — I noticed the polling data I keep hearing about is that I’m between 42 and 46 per cent favorable rating," Biden said.

"Everybody running for re-election in this time has been in the same position. There’s nothing new about that."
