A couple whose eyes met behind the bar of a Wetherspoon's pub have celebrated their anniversary in the perfect way - with a classic Spoons breakfast.

Caitlin and George Ashworth's friendship while both working at The Brun Lea in Burnley blossomed into a romance, and the couple quickly moved in together.

The loved-up couple have two sons - Theodore, five, and Albert, two - and finally tied the knot in August 2022 after delays caused by the pandemic.

George, 29, was working in the kitchen and 27-year-old Caitlin behind the bar at the pub when they first met in 2016, and the pair started dating that September.

Things moved fast and couple fell pregnant with their first, Theodore not long George 'popped the question' in September 2017 while they were on holiday in Wales.

However, their much-delayed wedding ceremony unfortunately had to be postponed several times because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The couple say their big day was worth the wait, and included plenty of Wetherspoons staff as guests.

They visited one of the budget pubs the night before the wedding and got hitched at the Grand Hotel, in Llandudno, North Wales, in August 2022.

Now Caitlin and George are vowing to celebrate their first year as husband and wife in the only way they know how – with a Spoons breakfast.

Reflecting on their anniversary plans and their journey together, Caitlin, from Colne in Lancashire, said: “We were really good friends first. We’d always go for drinks together. Then we hit it off.

“He worked in the kitchen, I was at the bar. I don’t think George will ever leave Spoons. He loves it.

“For our anniversary we’re going to stay in a castle and we’ll probably visit a Spoons. We’ll go for a Spoons breakfast."

Caitlin - who is also studying for a psychology degree - still works part-time as bar staff at George’s pub and loves bringing their youngest, Albert, in on a Friday morning.

She said: “He helps bring the plates.

“No doubt they’ll be working there when they are older.”

Caitlin and George are celebrating their first year of marriage early to get ahead of the summer holidays, and are redeeming a wedding gift of a stay in a Welsh castle to mark it. They plan to visit a Spoons or two while they are there.

George said: "It [Spoons] will always hold a special place in our hearts. You don't see it anymore - people meeting at work. It's mental."
