Tearful Jamal Murray goes "full circle" from "damaged goods" to NBA champion
Jamal Murray was full of emotion as he explained how his career came “full circle” after winning the NBA Finals with the Denver Nuggets.
Monday night saw the Nuggets win Game 5 of the Finals against the Miami Heat to win the series 4-1. A 94-89 victory was enough to help the Nuggets win their first NBA Championship in franchise history.
Nikola Jokic was named NBA Finals MVP with his performances across the five games. Murray, though, was also a key player for Nuggets throughout the playoffs, two years after suffering a devastating ACL injury.
April 2021 saw Murray suffer a torn ACL and spend more than a year on the sidelines. He would not make his return until October last year, 18 months after first suffering the injury.
After the Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals last month, head coach Michael Malone provided an insight into what happened with Murray after the injury. Malone said that Murray thought he would be traded, and labelled himself as “damaged goods”.

“I remember being on the bus with [Murray after the injury],” said Malone last month. “He had tears in his eyes, and that was the message. ‘Hey man, you’re gonna come back from this and not only are you gonna come back, you’re gonna be better.’
“His first thought was, ‘Man, are you gonna trade me? I’m damaged goods, are you guys gonna trade me now?’ I hugged him and I said, ‘Hell no! You’re ours. We love you, we’re gonna help you get back, and you’re gonna be a better player for it.'”
After winning the NBA Finals on Monday, Murray gave a speech to the crowd at Ball Arena. The Nuggets guard was almost overcome with emotion, as he promised that he would look to win more championships for the franchise.

I felt so much love from everyone in this arena. To see it full circle is amazing.
"This is the first, but it's the first of many. We knew we could do this. It's just kind of popping that cherry, and having everyone locked in. We've proved that. I think we can do it again, we can run it back.”
Soon after winning Game 5, Murray could also be seen chatting to Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke. The Canadian was spotted on camera giving a hug to Kroenke, before expressing his appreciation to the owner.
Murray could be heard saying to Kroenke: “Way to get you one, baby, I appreciate you staying patient with me. “Y'all could have gone a different route, I appreciate you staying with me. We got it done."
