We've all seen a public bin before, and while some of them are quite obviously made of plastic, some of the models that are commonly painted black and gold have the appearance of being made out of metal.

But it turns out, they're not metal at all - and many Brits are only just discovering the truth.

The realisation was posted on social media after a member of the public spotted a broken bin in their local area, which had a hole taken out of the side of it, revealing that the bins actually appear to have a wooden interior rather than a metal one.

In a post on Reddit, the passerby posted a picture of their findings and said: "I always thought these were made out of metal!"

And while many were gobsmacked, it didn't take long for fellow Reddit users to explain what the bins are actually made of to try and help put people's minds at ease.

One person wrote: "They're made out of fibreglass, with chipboard on the inside. Most have a metal liner inside, this one looks to have a wheelie bin inside."

The explanation seems logical, but it didn't stop people from expressing their shock at learning the truth behind how the bins are made - with one of those left stumped even confessing to being a bin man.

He said: "Today I learnt they are not metal. The problem with that is I worked two years ... as a binman."

While another person wrote: "So did I until I saw someone effortlessly lift it straight up to empty it, 'holy f**k that guy's a superhero... oh wait, no, it's fibreglass'."

And a third posted: "Wow, this is like seeing behind the curtain in Wizard of Oz."

"My life has been on a downward spiral for the past six weeks and this has not helped at all," a fourth joked.
