British temperatures are set to soar once again this summer with the hottest day of the year so far already hitting 25°C.

In the aftermath of the Covid pandemic and with the country still gripped by the cost of living crisis, staycations remain the preferred choice for many.

A new study of the latest Met Office records by Cofton Holidays has compiled data from the last nine years to find average temperatures and sun coverage for each of the most visited holiday favourites.

Meteorological data from weather stations across the UK was analysed, looking at measures such as average temperatures, frost days, sunshine hours and rainfall.

South Devon offers holidaymakers the best combination of hot and sunny weather overall, with London coming in as the hottest UK destination and Brighton as the sunniest.

Bristol, Bath and Cornwall also scored highly for reliably hot weather.

It comes as The Met Office has given its verdict on a reported mini-heatwave that could bring warmer weather to the UK next week.

Temperatures reached 24.8C in Porthmadog, north Wales, on Tuesday, beating Sunday's previous record of 24.4C in Plymouth.

Meanwhile, climate change is causing the hottest days in North-West Europe to warm at double the rate of average summer days - with trends in England, Wales and Northern France the most pronounced, scientists warn.

For England and Wales, the average summer day increased by approximately 0.26°C per decade, whilst the hottest day increased by around 0.58°C per decade, a report released last month said.
