A family has been left heartbroken after their 12-year-old son was killed at a sleepover during a horror shooting which was caught on camera.

Nolan Donald Grove, 13, from Pennsylvania, US, has been charged with third-degree murder as an adult after allegedly shooting his 12-year-old friend Kain Heiland in the back on April 1.

Pennsylvania State Police were called to the property at around 9.50pm after reports of a body lying on the pathway between their homes.

Officers said Nolan, Kain and another friend had spent the day together and planned to have a sleepover before the horrific shooting.

According to eyewitnesses, Nolan had been seen playing with a weapon and had been loading and unloading the gun on multiple occasions.

The suspect reportedly said he “wasn’t afraid to shoot somebody" during a chat with two girls, witnesses have claimed.

Nolan was seen pointing the gun at the victim before aiming it at his face while on a Facetime call, according to police.

In addition, the gun's laser light was seen on Kain during the call before he allegedly took the weapon out from his jumper.

In the video, Kain tells him: “Take your finger off the trigger” and “This is not fair; I’m the only one without a gun."

The witness claimed the suspect had been telling “mom” jokes throughout the day when Kain reportedly told him to be quiet.

Nolan reportedly said, "you know what happens" before he allegedly shot Kain in the back.

The witness yelled, “What the ----?” to Nolan. Another witness, watching on the Facetime call, heard Grove say, “I’m so sorry, K.”

The suspect allegedly told police the shooting was an "accident" as he was "walking and swinging his arms" before allegedly firing the firearm in his right hand.

Grandmother Linda Arvin paid tribute to Kain and called him the "funniest boy” who "made everyone laugh."

She told York Daily Record: “He loved to make everyone laugh and smile. He always made funny noises and we told him not to, but now we wish we could hear those funny noises.”

Nolan is charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person and firearms offences.

However, the heartbroken parents are furious the suspect has not been charged with first-degree murder.

Kain's stepdad believes the charges should be upgraded.

Kevin Quickel said: "He got third-degree murder charges thrown at him and licked his lips, like nothing," Quickel said after Nolan's arraignment. "His dad sat there. No sympathy on the kid or his father's face. To me, that's not something that should happen."

Devin Rexroth, Kain's mum, also lamented the charges after she had to bury her son last month during a private ceremony.

She said: "His parents will still get to see him. I'll never get to see Kain again."
