Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has claimed he lied about what caused the fatal fall of his housekeeper in his home.

Gloria Satterfield was the Murdaugh family housekeeper for two decades but died after a "trip and fall accident" at the hunting lodge owned by the family at the time.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating her death, filed as an accident, and has said it wishes to exhume her body.

Murdaugh - who became known for killing his wife and son in June 2021 - earned himself a huge pay-out after Gloria's passing as he assumed legal responsibility and told Gloria's two sons, Tony Satterfield and Brian Harriott to sue him for the insurance.

The murderer told the men no settlement was reached, but secretly pocketed $3.8million without their knowledge.

He also told them to use the attorney services of Cory Fleming, who was his best friend and co-conspirator in the pilot to pocket the cash. Fleming took home $600,000 in legal fees.

Brian and Tony were told in text messages that Murdaugh would "take care" of them after their mum's fatal fall. The brothers were paid $7.5million in insurance money and a separate judgement of $4.3million was made against Murdaugh.

The brothers were told that Gloria, 58, died because dogs were involved in her fatal trip and fall.

Gloria, who died four weeks later in hospital from a head injury, said she did not remember how she fell.

Court documents filed by Murdaugh said: "No dogs were involved in the fall of Gloria Satterfield on February 2, 2018.

"After Ms Satterfield’s death, [he] invented Ms Satterfield’s purported statement that dogs caused her to fall to force his insurers to make a settlement payment."

Attorney for the brothers, Eric Bland, said Murdaugh is attempting to betray his clients once again by making their claim fraudulent.

If Gloria did not trip and fall because of the dogs, then her sons' claims would be fraudulent and Murdaugh would owe them nothing.

Mr Bland told the Mail: "Are you going to believe anything that comes out of the mouth of a convicted double murderer, fraudster and liar?

"This is a desperate bid by a desperate man with desperate lawyers.

“After Ms. Satterfield’s death, [Murdaugh] invented Ms. Satterfield’s purported statement that dogs caused her to fall to force his insurers to make a settlement payment.”

Murdaugh filed the claims in response to a claim by insurance company Nautilus.

The response read: "Immediately following Gloria Satterfield’s fall on February 2, 2108, [Murdaugh] rushed to the scene, arriving before EMS.

"On March 29, 2018 Murdaugh stated that Ms Satterfield briefly regained consciousness during which time she stated that Murdaugh’s dogs had caused her to fall.

"This statement was heard by no one else and is contradicted by Ms Satterfield’s later statement to hospital staff that she had no idea what made her fall."

Murdaugh also claimed Gloria was at his property to collect a cheque for work done by someone else and was not there to work.

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole after killing his wife Maggie, 52, and son Paul, 21 amid a storm of financial problems.

Murdaugh is appealing the convictions.
