Several people, including an elderly man, are believed to have been injured by "two dogs on the loose attacking people" in Winson Green, Birmingham.

West Midlands Police launched an investigation following this afternoon's attacks, and seized the two dogs.

Children at nearby Barford Primary School in Birmingham were kept inside for an hour as officers attempted to bring the animals under control.

A man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a dog that was dangerously out of control, the police confirmed.

It said an elderly man was taken to hospital with bite injuries, but it wasn't expected to be life-threatening.

A terrifying text message sent to parents warned the "likelihood is the dogs will kill a human", as youngsters were kept in the hall for their safety, the BBC reported.

West Midlands Police said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening and the two dogs were seized and taken to a nearby kennel.

The full text message received by mums and dads, marked important, read: "We have just been informed by police there are two potentially very dangerous dogs circling the school.

"We will not be dismissing any children at their usual time from the advice of the police...we will keep them safe in the school hall until we have heard it is safe to release them.

"For your own safety please stay in your cars...the likelihood is the dogs will kill a human and the police are trying to make the situation safe."

A force spokesman said a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a dog that was dangerously out of control, Birmingham Live reported.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of possessing a dog which was dangerously out of control after a number of people received injuries after being attacked by two dogs.

"We were called to Willow Gardens, Winson Green, shortly after 2.30pm today (April 18), following reports two dogs were on the loose and attacking people.

"An elderly man was taken to hospital with bite injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. Five other people have been presented at hospital with bite injuries which are also not believed to be life-threatening.

"We have seized two dogs and both have been taken to secure kennels. We are investigating the incident and appeal for anyone with any information to contact us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 quoting log number 2743 of April 18."

It comes as dog experts warned anyone buying a pup online to make careful checks before taking a potentially dangerous pet into their home.

They also want more regulation of breeders and mandatory training for owners and dogs to help prevent attacks.

Hundreds of XL American bullys and American bulldogs are being sold on sites, such as Gumtree and Pets 4 Homes.

With just a few clicks we found over 20,000 dogs for sale on Gumtree and Pets 4 Homes across the country, a mix of puppies and adult dogs looking to be sold on to a new home.

Of these, 1,049 were American bullys – including 128 in Manchester, 201 in London and 75 in Leeds – and 135 were American Bulldogs.

Several of the listings alluded to behavioural problems with the dogs; for example, advertising them as “not suitable for a family with a young child”.
