Microbiologist shares how dirty your toilet actually is - and it's disturbing

A microbiologist has shared how dirty your bathroom can actually get after flushing the loo - and the results are pretty disturbing.

Microbiologist Tim Call, 32, from Utah took to his TikTok account after conducting an experiment in his home bathroom.

He decided to test his bathroom air quality after becoming interested about the effects of bathroom activities on air quality.

The resulting clip has now received over 317,000 views and people have been left in utter disbelief by what Tim found.

He explained that his experiment came in two parts - what happens without flushing, and what happens if you flush with the lid up.

After flushing he found five bacterial colonies (Jam Press Vid/@whatmightgrow)

After he left the loo for 10 minutes without flushing, he found just two bacterial colonies on his petri dish.

But when he flushed, with the lid still up, he found a whopping five bacterial colonies.

He said: "I make this content because I've always been curious about what was growing around me and I wanted to visually see it,” Tim said.

"It's starting to visually answer many questions that people have had. This time, I discovered that the air was not nearly as dirty as I thought it would be. While this was a sample size of one, and I plan on testing more, the results are still very surprising.

"I am extremely interested in increasing my sample size to determine if this test was just an outlier or if bathroom air isn't nearly as dirty as we perceived."

After sharing his discovery, many of his quarter of a million followers were shocked that some people flush without the lid down.

One wrote: "People don't close the lid before flushing?!"

Another TikToker wrote: "I close the toilet lid then flush!"

A third penned: "I'm disappointed! I am adamant that the seat lid should be down before flushing."

Somebody else joked: "It means my college roommate who told me flushing the toilet would get poop on her toothbrush was wrong, I win."
