The Premier League title race and the fight against relegation are both on the agenda this weekend as Southampton host Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side travel to St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon and will be attempting to cut the gap to current leaders Arsenal. The reigning champions sit eight points off of the pace - albeit having played a game fewer.
They laid down a considerable marker last time out with a 4-1 thumping of Liverpool - ironically the Gunners’ next opponents - at the Etihad Stadium. Whilst City will be trying their hardest to chase down the North London side, Southampton are also involved in a scrap of their own.
The Saints have endured a wretched season so far and sit bottom of the Premier League on just 23 points and four adrift of safety. They have had three managers take the reins at St Mary’s throughout the campaign.
Ralph Hassenhuttl, Nathan Jones and Ruben Selles have all been in charge at one point throughout the campaign but allowing for a dramatic reversal in fortunes, it appears that the Saints are set for a return to the Championship. It did appear as though they had given themselves a chance with a vital victory over Leicester and draws against both Manchester United and Tottenham before the international break.

Their survival hopes however took a huge hit in their last outing with a 1-0 defeat to relegation rivals West Ham. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s showdown, Selles is relishing the opportunity to face off with opposite number Guardiola.

“It’s exciting just to play some of them, also to play against Pep,” he said in his pre-match press conference. “Then let’s see what we can do. I think we prepared a solid and robust game plan.
“I think the boys know what to do exactly and then with our way to approach things, and our style, we are going to try to put a big performance there and try to win the game, that’s for sure.
“But, yeah, it’s exciting for me. It’s not only about Pep, it’s about the other managers, but in this game [I face him]."
