Four people have been arrested including a 14-year-old boy after a teenager was stabbed to death.

Northamptonshire Police confirmed four males aged 49, 21, 16 and 14, were now in custody following the incident in the Kingsthorpe area of Northampton on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers and ambulance crews scrambled to Harborough Road, close to the junction with The Cock Hotel, at around 3.35pm, where a 16-year-old boy was found injured.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, the boy died shortly afterwards.

Kingsthorpe College, which is located nearby, confirmed they would not be opening on Thursday due to an "ongoing incident in the community".

A police cordon around the crime scene is expected to remain in place overnight and into tomorrow as investigations continue.

Alongside house-to-house enquiries, residents have been advised that "an increased police presence will also remain in the area", including high-visibility patrols.

Northamptonshire Police Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Simon Barnes, said: “This is an exceptionally sad and tragic incident in which a young boy with his whole life ahead of him has died and I want to reassure the public that we are absolutely determined to bring the people involved to justice.

“Arrests were promptly made this evening, and enquiries are continuing to move at a fast pace however I would still appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information who has not yet come forward, to please do so.

“Whilst we do believe that this was an isolated incident, high-visibility police patrols will be taking place in the Kingsthorpe area to reassure the local community and I would encourage anyone with concerns in the area to approach one of our officers who will be happy to help.”

The incident has sparked a shocked reaction from local people, with one concerned mum saying online she was "scared to let my kids grow up around this area".

Another parent recalled receiving panicked messages from her teenage daughter on the way home from school, adding that the "community is reeling".

Lengthy delays to traffic were reported in the aftermath as roads were closed, with some reporting delays of around two hours. One commuter said nearby residents emerged from their houses to help direct traffic and check on people's welfare.

Police have asked witnesses, anyone with information, or anyone with CCTV, doorbell, or dash-cam footage of the area at the time, to call Northamptonshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 23000174855.
