A woman from Wisconsin has claimed that she was dreaming when she stabbed her sleeping ex-boyfriend 19 times last month.

Last month, police arrived at the home of Morgan Lund in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to find the 21-year-old crying and covered in blood as she applied pressure to the wounds of her victim.

Lund allegedly told cops that she "thought she saw something" when she attacked her ex-boyfriend, who she shares a child with and had recently broken up before the February 18 attack.

She was pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide by reason of mental disease or defect when Lund was in court on Monday.

It is thought that the mother-of-one had woken up at 6.30am and had taken her baby to the living room, where her ex - who remains unidentified in the case - was sleeping, to play in the playpen.

That is when Lund claims she saw a dark, non-human "figure" - a phenomenon she’s been hallucinating for six months - started attacking her ex-partner.

She is believed to have grabbed a pair of scissors and tried to kill the figure, but in reality she was attacking the father of her daughter.

Court documents, seen by New York Post, stated: "She had a muddled memory of something that might have been a dream, or her imagination, but she thought [victim] was yelling at their daughter."

The victim told police that he was woken up by the attack from Lund and was able to fight her off despite 19 stab wounds across his back, shoulders, chest, face and hands.

The victim alleged that it was not the first time that Lund had been violent towards him during their three-year relationship.

"[The victim] stated that throughout their relationship Morgan was very abusive, hitting him on several occasions. He reported that they constantly fight and argue," according to court documents.

"He stated they argue on a daily basis, but [he] shuts the argument down because he does not want to be involved with her any longer. She has threatened him in the past, but has never threatened to kill him as far as he is aware."

A psychiatric evaluation has been order for Lund, who is being held on a $250,000 (£211,067) bond. The next court hearing in the case is set for April 13.
