Dangerous e-bike rider faces jail after knocking dad unconscious in Newport crash

A dangerous e-bike rider who knocked out a dad in a horrific crash is facing jail.

Shocking CCTV footage showed Sam Bevan, 33, being flung off his feet while crossing the road in Newport, Wales.

The dad had no clue he had been mowed down and only discovered the truth when a neighbor showed him the footage after he regained consciousness.

E-bike rider Jordan Willetts, 35, had fled the scene after crashing into Sam, leaving him motionless on the ground.

He has now pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without a license, and failing to stop.

A court heard his bike was originally a push bike that was later modified.

Still from CCTV footage showing a man being hit by an electric bike on a wet road at night.

Sam had been walking home from work last November when he was sent crashing to the ground.

Willetts had been traveling the wrong way down a one-way street with no lights before the horror.

Sam went to the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran but was unable to explain to doctors how he got his injuries.

He added: “They were telling me I couldn’t drive for six months, I would have to have tests on my heart and brain – I was overwhelmed at that point because I just had no memory of it.

Jordan Willetts has pleaded guilty.

“The majority of my memory loss was a three to four-hour window. My stepfather was asking me my son’s birthday and I couldn’t remember. I was slightly upset at that, it was overwhelming.”

He was only able to fill in the gap two days later when two neighbors knocked on his door to say they had helped him.

Sam, who was signed off from his job for four weeks, said: “I have looked at the footage about 500 times but it still doesn’t seem real to me.

“It could have been really serious, if that had been a child, an old person, someone with a smaller frame – I was quite lucky.”

The dad continued: “I had no memories of what happened whatsoever.

“Eventually, when I was told, it was a relief that I actually knew what’s happened but at the same time frustration that I had been left in the middle of the road.”

Willetts was handed an interim driving ban and will be sentenced at a later date.
