King Charles keeps distance from Andrew as police inquiry deepens

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor may be hoping for some brotherly love - but judging by recent events, he will not be getting a check-up from his sibling, the King. Recently, Thames Valley Police (TVP) indicated that their investigation into the former Duke of York could also cover allegations of sexual misconduct.

He was originally arrested on his 66th birthday in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, over his role as a British trade envoy, and strenuously denies any wrongdoing. Last weekend, King Charles returned to his Norfolk estate of Sandringham to spend some time at Wood Farm, his father’s former home, as the main house is currently open to tourists.

It is just 0.6 miles - a 14-minute drive on the local roads - from his brother’s renovated five-bedroomed cottage, Marsh Farm.

But it has been reported that the 77-year-old monarch has not visited his middle brother Andrew, nor has he invited his sibling to pop over and see him.

When King Charles is in residence elsewhere or away on official duties, it must be easy for Andrew to convince himself that he has not been completely frozen out of the Royal Family.

The King last appeared with his brother in public last year at a requiem mass in London for the late Duchess of Kent.

Since then, Andrew has lost all his remaining titles and privileges and been turfed out of the 30-room Royal Lodge mansion in Windsor, instead moving to the far quieter and humbler Sandringham cottage.

But when Andrew realises that his brother is just 0.6 miles away and hasn’t even been called over for a quick brew and chocolate hobnob, it may finally dawn on him that the King may never want to be seen in public with him ever again.

Certainly, the monarch appears determined to remain as far from his middle brother as possible, especially while police continue their investigations.

After all, Buckingham Palace has made public declarations that it will support police in any way.

After Andrew’s arrest, the King said in an official statement: "I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office.

"What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation.

"Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all."

So while the case remains active Andrew will definitely not be entertaining the King.

But you have to ask what King Charles gains by ever seeing his scandal-prone brother again? In terms of their future relationship, surely for King Charles it’s over.
