Tragedy at UK beach as man dies trying to rescue relatives from water

A man has tragically died at a UK beach after trying to save two family members in difficulty in the water.

Police were called by the ambulance service to a beach in Padstow, Cornwall, around 3.50pm on bank holiday Monday (May 25).

A man was "suffering cardiac arrest in the sea" at Tregirls Beach after he entered the water to try and save two family members, police said.

The family members were brought to safety by members of the public but sadly, the man, who is local and in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been made aware.

The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner, reported CornwallLive.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were called by the Ambulance Service at around 3.50pm on Monday 25 May following a report of a man suffering a cardiac arrest in the sea at Tregirls Beach, Padstow.

"Emergency services and the RNLI attended the scene but sadly, the local man in his 60s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin are aware. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner."

It comes as the UK experiences scorching temperatures. They did not fall below 21.3C on Monday at Kenley Airfield, south London, as the country broke the record for the warmest May night for the second consecutive day, the Met Office said.

The country also recorded its provisional all-time hottest meteorological spring temperature when Kew Gardens in south-west London hit 34.8C on Monday.

Amid the bank holiday heat, firefighters worked through the night to tackle a grass fire near Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh as temperatures in the city hit 25C. Clouds of smoke were seen rising from the area around the natural landmark and local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution.

On Monday, a 13-year-old boy also died after getting into difficulty in a West Yorkshire reservoir. The West Yorkshire Police said the teenage boy was pulled from the water and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, the AA warned that the interior of vehicles can reach 60C on a day when the outside temperature is 27C.

The heat is considered to be dangerous for some vulnerable groups including older adults as their bodies struggle to regulate temperature. Age UK recommended staying inside during the hottest hours of the day, between 11am and 3pm, and having regular cold baths or showers.
