Green Party gains questioned as councillor films himself driving fuel-guzzling Lamborghini

A Green Party councillor has faced criticism after posting a video of himself driving a Lamborghini supercar just days after being elected.

Baggy Khan, 25, who was elected to Bolton council on Thursday, shared footage of himself arriving at a wedding in a bright orange Lamborghini Huracán Spyder over the weekend.

Critics called it "ironic" that he was driving the vehicle, which consumes more than twice the amount of fuel as an average car, given the Greens’ plans to eliminate petrol and diesel cars from the roads.

Responding to a comment on social media, Mr Khan said: "Who said councillors can’t drive cars like this?”

Mr Khan was one of 587 Green councillors who won council seats at Thursday’s local election as the party made substantial gains across the UK.

Under Zack Polanski’s leadership, the party has faced accusations of straying from its environmental roots in favor of identity politics and using the issue of Gaza to gather support from the Muslim community.

Mr Khan, who was elected to the Halliwell ward of the council in Greater Manchester with 1,752 votes, frequently mentioned Gaza during his campaign but largely ignored environmental policies.

His social media accounts are filled with posts showcasing expensive cars, including a Mercedes with a personalized number plate.

The Lamborghini he was seen driving over the weekend is believed to be a rental vehicle. He was spotted arriving at an event with dozens of other luxury cars.

The car achieves approximately 15 miles per gallon – less than half of the average 38 on normal road cars – and has a top speed of 200mph due to its 5.2-litre V10 engine.

The Green Party has proposed several anti-motorist policies, including calls to end the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2027 and their use entirely by 2035.

The party also wants to reduce motorway speed limits to 55mph, increase taxes on motoring, reduce the number of parking spaces, and make drivers retake their tests every five years.

Nadim Muslim, the leader of the Conservatives on Bolton council, said the party’s local election campaign was "focused more on Palestine than the Planet".

He told The Telegraph: "I think it’s now clear to any voter that the environment is at the bottom of the Green Party’s priorities.

"Their local election campaign focused more on Palestine than the Planet. It is symptomatic of an organization that is using sectarianism to further a divisive agenda in British politics.

"Further, it’s ironic that Green candidates and councillors drive these cars, not only against their supposed environmental beliefs but also while promoting an economic policy that would see cars like that disappear in the UK."

Before the election, Mr Khan faced criticism after footage appeared to show him filming while driving.

In June 2023, he posted a video to his Instagram account showing him in the driver’s seat before the camera flips to display the steering wheel as the car travels down the motorway, according to the Bolton News.

He reportedly posted a similar video in October 2022, although both videos appear to have been deleted.

At the time, Mr Khan said the videos were "very old" and he "won’t be posting driving videos" in the future.

He added: "I am confident that I will be able to prove that I am not guilty of breaking the law.

"Anyone who knows me will know that I am a clean-cut young man with no criminal record."

The Green Party was said to be "internally investigating" the incident.

Mr Muslim said: "There is a serious risk and danger to life. Bolton has seen numerous high-speed crashes involving this type of behavior. If it hasn’t been already, it should be investigated by the police."

Mr Khan describes himself as an entrepreneur and helps run several business ventures, including a recruitment firm, a logistics and transport company, and a vitamin supplement supplier.

He, the Green Party, and Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
