Two buildings have collapsed in a major Turkish city, leaving people trapped under debris.

Emergency services rushed to the Fatih district of Istanbul following reports of two buildings collapsing after an ’explosion’. Three people were initially said to have been pulled from the rubble and taken to the hospital with injuries, while two remained trapped.

According to Turkish media Yirmidort TV, all five people have been recovered from the rubble, though the extent of their injuries remains unclear.

Officials in Istanbul claim the collapse was caused by a natural gas explosion.

Footage from the scene shared by Turkish media shows a large search and rescue operation underway with several firefighters and medical teams on the scene.

Other images show the extent of the devastation in the district with flattened buildings and debris scattering the surrounding streets. The injured are seen on stretchers while emergency services continue to search through the rubble.
