The Duchess of Sussex has finally managed to make contact with her estranged father, Thomas Markle, who is currently in hospital after having his left leg amputated, her spokesperson confirmed.

The communication — a private letter — is now in his hands after several attempts to reach him were complicated by the presence of a Daily Mail reporter at his bedside, which Meghan’s team described as a breach of ethical boundaries.

Meghan has been estranged from her father since her 2018 wedding, after he was revealed to have staged paparazzi photos. Last week her spokesperson said she had “reached out”, though Mr Markle told the Mail on Sunday he was confused, claiming he had received no messages and had not changed his phone number.

The duchess’ spokesperson now says the letter reached him only with the help of “trusted contacts”, adding that constant reporting from his bedside made private communication nearly impossible. Meghan reportedly contacted Mail journalists for assistance and even called hospitals in the Philippines, but found no direct way to connect with her father.

DMG Media, the parent company of the Daily Mail, rejected suggestions of manipulation, saying Thomas Markle himself invited journalist Caroline Graham to be present and that nothing had been published without his consent. The Mail stated it would help facilitate communication if needed.

Thomas Markle, who moved to the Philippines and has never met his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet, remains in recovery following intensive care and surgery. Despite strained relations, he has repeatedly expressed hope for reconciliation, saying he does not want to die estranged from his daughter.

Meghan previously won a privacy case against Associated Newspapers for publishing parts of a handwritten letter she sent to him in 2018.
