Massive blaze near Forest Hill station causes travel chaos in south London

A huge fire broke out this evening at a shop on Perry Vale, near Forest Hill Station in South London, prompting a major emergency response. Around 15 fire engines and 100 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade rushed to the scene after flames engulfed a ground-floor shop with flats situated above.

Residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed due to heavy smoke, and the station was closed, causing significant disruption to rail and road traffic. A 25-metre safety cordon was put in place, and around 15 people were evacuated from nearby buildings. No injuries have been reported so far.

As of 9:45pm, parts of the shop and upper floors remained alight, as well as a single-storey workshop at the rear of the property. Fire crews are expected to work through the night to fully extinguish the blaze.

Station Commander Anthony Lewis said: “This will be a protracted incident, with crews working through the night. We’re advising people in the local area to continue to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke travel. Significant traffic disruption can be expected in the Forest Hill area, including on the A205 South Circular Road.”

Train services through Forest Hill Station have been suspended until further notice. Southern Rail confirmed that tickets are being accepted on alternative routes between London Bridge and London Victoria via East Croydon, as well as on local TfL bus services.
