Poland vows to shoot down airspace intruders, but Tusk warns against rash escalation

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has declared that Poland will not hesitate to shoot down any object that violates its airspace.

“If they cross into our territory and fly over Poland – there will be no discussion, the decision will be clear,” Tusk told reporters at a press conference.

At the same time, he stressed the need for caution in less clear-cut situations, such as the recent flight of Russian fighter jets over the Petrobaltic platform, which did not involve a territorial breach.

According to Tusk, Poland must avoid actions that could trigger “a very acute phase of conflict.” He added that before making decisions in such critical moments, he must be certain that Poland’s allies would respond in the same way:
“I need to be absolutely sure that all allies will treat this exactly as we do.”
