Donald Trump had lunch with the Royal Family and paid a private visit to Queen Elizabeth’s tomb in Windsor Castle during his controversial state visit on Wednesday.

Trump’s welcome by King Charles was in contrast to protests in central London, where around 3,000 demonstrators against his visit began a march along Regent Street. Campaigners from as many as 50 groups were taking part in the action.

Earlier, Trump appeared to tell the Princess of Wales she was “so beautiful” as he was given a family-centered royal welcome to Windsor Castle.

Kate and William waited outside Marine One, the call sign of the US Marine Corps aircraft carrying the president, to begin the royal charm offensive shortly after midday on Wednesday.

Trump was greeted by William with a handshake, and the president appeared to say: “Hello, my friend. How are you?”. He then moved on to shake the princess’s hand, and she gave him a broad smile as he appeared to tell her: “You’re so beautiful, so beautiful.”
