Kim Jong-un to unveil new military policy at 9th Party Congress
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated that the country will introduce a policy of jointly advancing nuclear arms and conventional military strength during an upcoming key meeting of its ruling party, state media KCNA reported on Saturday.
While inspecting weapons research centres on Thursday and Friday, Kim mentioned "the 9th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea would propose the policy of simultaneously advancing the development of nuclear forces and conventional armed forces in the area of strengthening national defence," KCNA reported.
On Friday, Kim also supervised a shooting drill by the North Korean military and examined a hospital construction site, KCNA reported.
The series of domestic activities by Kim follows his visit to Beijing earlier this month for his largest international multilateral event, as well as meetings with leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which elevated his international profile.
Meanwhile, a KCNA commentary on Saturday criticized a tabletop military exercise planned next week by the U.S. and South Korea, labelling the exercise as a "nuclear war drill" and claiming it justifies the advancement of North Korea’s nuclear stance.
