Donald Trump: Charlie Kirk ’assassin in custody’

The suspect believed to have shot and killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk in front of thousands of horrified students is in custody, Donald Trump has announced.

The US President stated that there is a "high degree of certainty" that the likely gunman has been apprehended following an FBI manhunt.

He mentioned that "someone very close to him turned him in," with a "minister, father" assisting in his capture.

"I think with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody. He’s in custody," he told a broadcaster.

"He’s going to be found guilty, I imagine, and I hope he gets the death penalty. Charlie Kirk was an exceptional person; he didn’t deserve this," he added.

Investigators had been appealing for help with the FBI offering a $100,000 reward for information that could lead to the suspect’s identification.

CCTV footage released on Thursday showed a ’person of interest’ wearing a black top with what appears to be a USA flag in the center, along with sunglasses and a black hat with a white logo.

He is seen in the footage running across a building roof and jumping off, before casually strolling towards a street at the edge of the campus and fleeing the scene through a wooded area.
