British tourist in critical condition after head-first dive into pool at Ibiza hotel

A British tourist is fighting for his life in hospital after smashing his head on the bottom of a pool at his hotel in the Spanish party island of Ibiza.

The 23-year-old was admitted to an intensive care unit with skull and spinal injuries following the disaster yesterday afternoon.

He is believed to be in ‘very serious’ condition after an emergency surgery.

The man hurt himself after falling or diving head-first into the pool, but the exact circumstances are still being investigated.

The tourist remained today in intensive care at the private Nuestra Senora del Rosario Polyclinic.

A spokesperson said the medical diagnosis includes a cervical spinal cord injury, head trauma and a fracture of the sixth vertebra.

They added: ‘Yesterday afternoon, a 23-year-old British man was injured after diving headfirst into a swimming pool at a hotel in the town of San Antonio.

‘We do not have detailed information about the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.

‘The young man was taken to the Nuestra Senora del Rosario Polyclinic, where he underwent surgery by the neurosurgery team. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit.’

This is the latest incident to throw light of the often unruly parties going on in Ibiza.

It comes a week after a promising hockey player from Dundee plunged to his death off a hotel balcony in Ibiza Rocks in San Antonio.
