Powerful explosion in Derby: man hospitalized, two houses destroyed

A man has been sent to the hospital after a large suspected gas explosion last night.

The massive blast shook Eden Street in Derby yesterday evening and caused significant damage to two homes.

Amazing drone pictures show roof tiles and bricks scattered, windows shattered, and several rooms at the back of both properties exposed to the elements.

One man was injured, but the extent of his injuries is not yet known, Derbyshire Police said.

A police cordon is in place on Eden Street, London Road, and Shardlow Road, and officers are asking people to avoid the area.

In its latest update shared at 11pm last night, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service said: ‘Emergency services will remain on the scene of a possible gas explosion at a terraced property on Eden Street in Alvaston overnight.

‘Firefighters, police and ambulance were called to the incident at 7.24pm. Four fire engines, a command unit and specialist officers are in attendance.

‘One man was taken to hospital; the extent of his injuries is unknown.

‘Urban search and rescue specialists (USAR) are supporting further searches as a precautionary measure.

‘Structural engineers are assessing two adjoining properties that have been evacuated. Colleagues from emergency planning are supporting the evacuated occupants of these properties.

‘Road closures on Eden Street, London Road and Shardlow Road will remain in place overnight.

‘Firefighters and Derbyshire Constabularly will remain on scene overnight.’
