Man suffers electric shock as bungee ride hits power line at village fair

A man suffered an electric shock and two other people were hurt when a bungee ride was set up underneath a pylon at a village fair.

The St George’s Day fete in Markstates Common, near Chailey in East Sussex, was evacuated after the incident this morning.

Organiser Yasmin Tomlinson posted on Facebook: ‘I’m really sorry to let everyone know but due to a serious incident we are having to evacuate our fete and postpone our event.

‘We are so sorry and so sad.’

In a reply, Linda Truluck described ‘a massive bang and smoke’ coming from the ride after ‘the metal poles touched the electric power lines’.

She added: ‘Thankfully no one was hurt.’

The annual event was organised by the Chailey Bonfire Society to raise money for a Christmas fireworks display and party.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said three people were assessed at the scene and one was taken to hospital for further treatment.

‘It did not appear they were in a serious condition,’ the spokesman said.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: ‘Police assisted emergency services with a medical incident at an event in Markstakes Corner, Chailey, reported at about 11am on Saturday, April 26.

‘It is understood that a man in his 20s sustained an electric shock and was taken to hospital as a precaution.’
