Controversial MMA champion Conor McGregor announces bid for Irish presidency
Irish election laws place no restrictions on MMA fighter Conor McGregor’s bid for the presidency. The laws only specify age and citizenship requirements, with no mention of a criminal record.
MMA fighter Conor McGregor has announced his intention to become the next president of Ireland, calling on citizens to vote for him to "save the nation." McGregor made his statement on his social media account on X (Twitter).
The fighter’s message appeared online on the evening of March 20. He assured his fellow Irishmen that they could make an easy and right choice by electing him as president. McGregor also used a slogan reminiscent of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign. While Trump said, "Make America Great Again," McGregor promised to protect his homeland.
"SAVE IRELAND TOGETHER!" he wrote.

The website of Ireland’s electoral commission states that a presidential candidate must be a citizen of the country and at least 35 years old. There are no other criteria for candidate registration. The president is elected for a seven-year term, with primarily ceremonial duties and minimal influence over the government and parliament.
