Prince Harry has a strained relationship with King Charles, but a source has said they are trying to find a way forward.

The monarch was diagnosed with cancer last month and his son rushed from America to be with him after hearing the news. The pair sat down for a half-an-hour chat during Harry's visit, which is believed to have been their first private conversation for 15 months.

The Duke of Sussex has since revealed his plans to return to the UK and hopefully reunite with the Royal Family. A source said these developments show Charles is taking "baby steps" with his son to mend their fraught relationship.

"I'm sure it was emotionally draining for both of them, but it was a step in the right direction. It was a positive move," the source told People magazine.

Royal expert Ingrid Seward also said Charles would love Harry to come back to the royal fold. However, this won't happen without Prince William's blessing, something Ingrid said is unlikely.

She explained: "Of course he would like Harry to be the prodigal son and come back and would be much happier if William and Harry were friends again. But he realises that is just not about to happen."

Prince Harry announced his plans to return to the UK just last month and admitted he felt grateful to have been able to visit Charles following his diagnosis. "Look I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him I'm grateful for that," he told Good Morning America host Will Reeve.

He was then asked if the King's ill-health might have a "reunifying effect" on the family amid the ongoing feud, to which Harry responded: "I'm sure, Throughout all these families I see it on a day-to-day basis the strength of the family unit coming together. I think any illness, any sickness brings families together."

Touching on the possibility of returning to the UK, Harry said: "My family and my life in California is as it is. I have got other trips planned. That would take me through the UK or back to the UK, so you know, I'll stop in and see my family as much as I can."
