Jamie Carragher has warned Sir Jim Ratcliffe that it will be impossible to knock Manchester City off their perch until Pep Guardiola leaves the club.

The Ineos chief spelt out his desire to usurp the Premier League champions after acquiring a 27.7 per cent stake in Manchester United last month. City have dominated domestically since Guardiola joined City back in 2016; a period which has seen United's own powers significantly wane.

Ratcliffe's comments were eerily similar to Sir Alex Ferguson's infamous rant about Liverpool. He said: "We have a lot to learn from our noisy neighbour (City) and the other neighbour (Liverpool). They are the enemy at the end of the day.

"There is nothing I would like better than to knock both of them from their perch. He (Fergie) was the first one who came out with that expression. I am in the same place as Alex - 100 per cent. He was fiercely competitive and that is why he was successful. We have to be the same."

But Carragher has warned Ratcliffe that his aim is not a realistic one because of Guardiola's presence. The Spaniard has won the title in five of his seven seasons in the Premier League and could make history by making it four consecutive triumphs if City retain this term. Carragher simply doesn't see things changing while Guardiola is around.

He told The Telegraph: "Manchester United can forget about knocking Manchester City off their perch while Pep Guardiola remains in English football. United can change owners, headhunt the best chief executive and sporting director in the world, revamp their recruitment department, rebuild Old Trafford and appoint their best manager since Sir Alex Ferguson. It doesn’t matter. So long as Guardiola is around, City will lose no sleep.

"United will never be the most dominant club in their city, let alone the rest of the country until City are in the process of hiring a new coach."

Carragher then went on to outline that United are getting a taste of their own medicine after enjoying a sustained period of dominance during Ferguson's legendary tenure. United haven't won the league since Ferguson stepped down at the end of the 2012/13 campaign.

Carragher added: "While Ferguson was in charge, United were guaranteed to compete for the top honours. Yes, he was challenged and beaten by Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho among others during different periods, but he was never dethroned as the Premier League’s best manager during his reign. Everyone knew at the start of every season if you finished above United, you were probably going to be champions. That is now true of those fighting City. They are the standard by which everyone else is judged.

"Guardiola’s presence ensures that will not change. Like Ferguson, he is too good to be permanently overtaken. Mourinho was ridiculed when he suggested finishing second to Pep’s City in 2018 was 'one of his biggest achievements in football'. In retrospect, you can see where he was coming from."
