Mum in horror 'crush' by moving taxi hours after son's wedding
A mum-of-two was left seriously injured after being 'crushed' by a moving taxi just hours after her son's wedding in Finland.
Hayley McAleer, 54, was celebrating with her husband, Liam, when the joyous occasion turned into a nightmare. Hayley's family explained how she got into a taxi outside a restaurant in Helsinki, but it drove off before she was fully inside. They said she was knocked over, dragged under the car and squashed against a post, leaving her with severe injuries.
Hayley, who is a vet nurse from Urmston in Trafford, Greater Manchester, suffered serious damage to her right leg and her right arm was broken in two places. She's now stuck in bed and can't feed herself because of her injuries. Her niece, Danielle Clucas, 31, said a quick-thinking stranger saved her aunt's life by tying a tourniquet around her leg to stop her bleeding.
Family and friends were at the restaurant party, but no one else was hurt. Reports in Finland say that Helsinki police are looking into what happened. Hayley doesn't drink and had insurance for the wedding trip. Danielle said: "She's spent some time in intensive care in a hospital in Helsinki and has now been transferred to the trauma unit. She's undergone multiple surgeries already in the last week and will be needing God knows how many more for the foreseeable future.
"It is going to be a while before she is even well enough to be able to transferred to a hospital back in the UK." The incident happened on Tuesday, February 20 on Mannerheimintie, one of Helsinki's main boulevards. Hayley's husband Liam, a builder, is still at his wife's hospital bedside in Helsinki with their daughter, Shannen and Jake, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Danielle said: "The taxi driver for some reason drove off whilst Hayley was getting into the taxi, resulting in her being run over by the taxi and crushed into a bollard. The police have got CCTV. Luckily, a passer-by was extremely quick and jumped into action, applying his belt as a tourniquet around her leg to stop the bleeding. It saved her life. Liam is staying with Hayley in Finland until she is well enough to return back to the UK."
Family and friends are now rallying round with a GoFundMe appeal launched to help the couple cover bills back home and expenses. More than £6,000 has been raised so far. Danielle, also from Urmston, shared in the appeal that they had a 'fantastic day' before 'tragedy hit'. She said: "Hayley and her husband Liam - who is still over there with her - are currently not working and have bills to pay back home, as well as Liam's accommodation to be able to stay with his wife in Finland.
"Hayley was rushed into intensive care at Helsinki Hospital, where she remains at the moment and for the foreseeable. Her injuries are extremely severe, but thankfully she is alive. Liam is staying with Hayley in Finland until she is well enough to return back to the UK."
"Whilst they are over there, they still have bills to pay at home and unfortunately, with both being out of work, we are hoping to help as much as possible to make life as easy as we can so they are able to focus on Hayley getting better without the added stress of worrying about things back home."
"The family are extremely overwhelmed by the help and support they have received so far." According to reports in Helsinki, the driver is suspected by police of 'endangering traffic safety and causing injury'.
